I apologize to everyone who released a podcast I loved in the last month or so, because I should’ve written about it already. I’m sorry, dammit! I’m apologizing like the Canadian I am.
Because of my prolonged absence, things might get a little listy in this issue. Just roll with it, okay?
Peak Armchair Expert: Tiffany Haddish
If you want to know what makes Armchair Expert so fun, this episode is perfect. Tiffany Haddish—who always speaks without pretense, which I love—got in a car accident on the way to do the podcast, so Dax went out to pick her up. The whole conversation reflected this dramatic and quirky turn of events!
The fun continued in the fact check, along with bonus guest Aaron (Dax’s best friend since childhood, who’s just so sweet and funny you want to buy him a bag of candy and share it with him). There was something so intimate and personal about this whole episode, it reminded me of why I love podcasts in general and why I’m so obsessed with this particular one.
Peak Office Ladies: John Krasinski
This one is different because it’s an atypical episode. It is not for the cynics among you; it’s full of sap and sweetness.
There’s no episode review in this one, it’s just a straight-up interview, and it’s joyful and funny and uplifting—plus it was a fun surprise finding out that Emily Blunt contributed one of my favorite things in the final season.
Bring on the lists
We’ve arrived at the listy part! I’ve listened to SO many podcasts since my last issue that they’ve mish-moshed into one!
No.
They’re all distinct! That’s why I have to list. There are too many that were wonderful and I don’t want you to miss any of them. In no particular order…
Malcolm McDowell on WTF with Marc Maron
Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden on Smartless
Carol Burnett on WTF with Marc Maron
Carol Burnett on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend
“Charades” on Trek, Marry, Kill
Maya Rudolph on Armchair Expert (you will fall in love with her, btw)
Chelsea Peretti on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend
“Emergence” on Trek, Marry, Kill
Rebel Wilson on Armchair Expert
Tig Notaro on WTF with Marc Maron
“By Any Other Name” on Trek, Marry, Kill
“Someone to Watch Over Me” on Trek, Marry, Kill
And yes, I totally missed that Wiser Than Me came back, that Chris Pine and Tiffany Haddish were each on WTF with Marc Maron, and much more. I’m still catching up!
It’s a lot.
And now for some shameless self-promotion…
Did I mention I went to France? My husband and I went on a river cruise of Paris and northern French towns with my dad and his husband. I posted beautiful scenery pictures on Instagram and Little Riker pictures on Twitter.
Since I got back, I’ve been experiencing Mal de Débarquement Syndrome,
It’s a “rare neurologic disorder characterized by a persistent false sense of motion, often including sensations of rocking, bobbing, and swaying.” Yep. I’ve been bobbing and swaying every minute since, and we got off the boat a week ago. The only break I get is when I’m driving or riding in a car. It has been… challenging.
I still wouldn’t trade the trip for anything. We had so much fun drinking cappuccinos and wine and eating great food and seeing pretty towns and using my bad French and reading books… I didn’t even bring my laptop, which was completely out of character for me.
Before all that happened, I did some podcasting.
I’m always SO happy to be on Trek, Marry, Kill, as it’s a podcast I love listening to.
And in addition to our regular All Access Star Trek episodes, Tony and I helped promote the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Purple Stride Walk with Armin Shimerman, Kitty Swink, Jonathan Frakes, and Juan Carlos Coto.
Near the end of the podcast, I finally told Jonathan Frakes about the existence and Twitter adventures of Little Riker. It was a big moment!
My Gilmore Girls book is available for pre-order
It comes out in September, and you can pre-order it now.
So exciting! I still can’t believe I got to do it.
Honourable poetry mention! Nice! Congrats 🎊
